Celebrated my 20th birthday this past weekend and thought it would be fun to reflect on my first two decades with 20 things I have learned.

20th birthday night out outfit

  1. Say yes to as many things as possible, but not more than you can handle.
  2. Try to leave everyone with the impression of being kind and courteous. The world is smaller than you think.
  3. But don’t be afraid to stand up for yourself and tell others how you feel.
  4. Grades can be the bane of your existence, don’t let them stress you out too much.
  5. Don’t study hard, study smart. Limit distractions, plan to do a bit each day, and DON’T START THE NIGHT BEFORE (still learning this one)…
  6. Sometimes week night dollar beers (or happy hour) is necessary. Plan accordingly for the next day.
  7. Sometimes staying in and watching Netflix over homework is necessary. Don’t be afraid to give yourself a break every now and again.
  8. Where you live or who you live with defines so little about your friendships. Decide who matters and invest time in those relationships.
  9. Wearing a nice outfit to school or for an interview can change your entire outlook. Feel good in what you wear, be confident and most importantly, be COMFORTABLE.
  10. All relationships have the potential to become toxic. Listen to those around you and don’t become blinded by the situation you are in.
  11. Your parents know a whole lot more than you, but not everything.
  12. If you wouldn’t want your grandparents and teachers to see it, don’t post it.
  13. Try not to talk negatively about people. Technology can make your words last forever.
  14. Pour all of yourself into what you love, and what you love to do.
  15. That being said, venture out from the path you are on and try new things, classes, etc. You never know what you are missing out on.
  16. Don’t pass up on a photo op because of you not looking your best. You’ll want those memories later.
  17. Save your money for rainy days and important things, but also spend some if you come across things you want. Treat yo’self.
  18. Always have a kick-ass playlist ready to go for car jams and impromptu pre’s at your place. My Spotify is constantly updating.
  19. Don’t take yourself too seriously. Your life isn’t perfect so your Instagram doesn’t have to be. Post the pics you like, and keep them, you’ll want to look back at them.
  20. You don’t have to have a million friends to celebrate with, or a million followers to like your posts. Sometimes you have a better time with a few close friends taking goofy pictures squished in your bathroom because the lighting is so great (see above pic) and posting them to remember how glad you were to turn 20 with all of them present.

From Day to Night: Throwback Thursday to my Office-Appropriate Ensemble

It’s hard to believe these pictures were taken over a year ago. Of course this is not a sterotypical outfit for a 16 year old’s birthday dinner, but I like to think I’m at least a little bit original. This remains as one of my favourite outfits to wear to the office or just out in general. Peplum tops are incredibly flattering and were an obsession of mine at the time. They work perfectly with the fitted grey trousers, which were on trend with the cropped pants of the time. The heels were where it got glamorous. Almost in a “mullet-style” business in the front, party in the back (sparkly heels). For a day at the office, I’d usually just pair this with some black flats.
