Some Serious Sleeve Action

Every season I try to take a look at what the trends are and pick one or two to try out. I’ll admit, there have been some hits and some misses, but I am pretty sure this one could come back to haunt me. However, I am absolutely obsessed with this trend as of the moment.

From seeing blogger and instagram styling I have gotten a strong craving for a crazy-sleeved blouse. The contrast of something so classic turned into something completely trendy makes it an incredibly interesting piece. I can actually see these sticking around for a while, or having stylists be able to cover them up or use them in a different fashion. Either way, I need to get my hands on one. I have been looking online and here are some of my favourites. Let me know what you think.

Fashion Week Vibes in a University Town

Last night was a pretty big deal for the fashion community… Not as a whole, but specifically for the students of one university, mine! The largest student run fashion show in Canada, and one of my friends was modelling in it. SO, of course I had to be there. I was very impressed with the show and honestly just the style of all the people attending the event. You could tell everyone was dressing up for a good time, and it was all for an incredibly good cause. All in all, I would call that a pretty successful night. Not quite fashion week, but my own personal fashion-y night.

Hey! Sometimes a girl needs a night of getting ready and wearing non-everyday clothes. The possibilities were almost overwhelming (and somewhat limited when you need to bus there in less than spring-y weather).

Any chance I get to pull out these heeled over the knee beauties, I live for. The rich chocolate brown suede and flattering cut just above the knee are a killer combo.

Boots: Nine West, Dress: Forever 21, Jacket: Danier, Necklace: Forever 21.

I also try to capitalize on low-risk lipstick wearing situations, and last night fit the bill. Went for NARS Train Bleu, but ultimately decided to tone it down to a nice moisturizing Burt’s Bees lip crayon in the shade Napa Vineyard. I was very impressed by the texture as well as how long it lasted on the lips (even through post-show guac and chips!).

How was your Saturday night?

Thanks for reading!

Little Dose of Sunshine

Got away for a little vacation this past week to the (mostly cloudy) Captiva Island in Florida. Thought some time in the sun might be just what I needed to clear my head, but if anything it has only gotten foggier. You see, going away for a week deemed “reading week” (most likely just a Canadian university thing but I’m not completely sure) simply puts your mind into a constant state of thinking how far behind you will get by relaxing. In effect, I probably would have been less stressed if I had remained at school.

Fortuntely, I have actually just written an essay on this for one of my classes, so this short little blog post break can technically still be considered studying. In a world of constantly going, is there ever any true relaxation?

Consider this; if anyone from your workplace truly needed to get a hold of you, they could probably do it at any hour of the day, awake or asleep, wherever you are. Isn’t that just a little frigtening? We can never fully disconnect. Even in my no wifi, no phone service state I find myself constantly cutting my time by the pool short to return to my hotel room and check how my instagram post is doing. So for the remainder of my trip, I resolve to fully disconnect. And, I challenge anyone reading this to do the same, pick a day in the near future and leave your phone at home. I have a feeling your mind will thank you.

1 Shade of Mauve

Ok, when I saw this dress this week I knew it would have to be praised. Something has to be said for this girl’s stylist. The dress Dakota Johnston wore to the premiere of 50 Shades Darker really shocked me at first. It is so unbelievable simple, but she looked so amazing. All components of the look from her gorgeous braid to the way the dress draped when her costar Jamie Dornan put his hand around her waist. It was refreshing and different while still being classic and elegant.

What do you guys think of her look?

Feminist Fashion

Due to recent events, a wave of girlpower has spread across the US and other supporting countries. Personally, watching the news from Canada still makes me feel like part of the movement. In tough times, women get tougher.

The thing I love most about this is it is bringing all types of women and other feminism supporters together, giving the issue a global focus. Fortunately, the actions won’t stop here. Major corporations and brands are getting on board to protest all kinds of current issues. One of my favourite ways to show support is through catchy clothing items. Not only do they make a statement in the fashion sense (which is kind of irrelevant) but they focus on a larger message. This is something many celebrities and sartorial stars are getting on board with. Here are my picks:

2017

Well, a couple weeks in and I have already slipped on one of my resolutions (to post more). I have given up my free writing and given most of my efforts to clubs and magazines at my school. That is something I am hoping will change in the new year.

Processed with VSCO with b5 preset

Other resolutions:

Gym minimum 4 times per week.

MEAL PREP

Post minimum once every two weeks, more if possible. (hey, I’m a university student, its a lot of writing!)

At the very minimum have a outline/draft for my essays/work 24 hours BEFORE the due date (ok, this one just means I am a severe procrastinator).

Create a weekly/monthly budget and stick with it. In general, spend more money on experiences and things that will make me happier in the long run.

Are you all as glad to be done with 2016 as I am? I think 2017 is already shaping up to be better, as the first 16 days has shown me. I am going to a conference this weekend so I will have an outfit post up later this weekend. For now, have a lovely week!

What to Do if You’re Having Fashion Week Withdrawals (And You Weren’t Even There)

You can also check out this post on the My Trending Stories website here!

Ah yes, that time of year again. The air gets crisper, the days get shorter, and thousands of models, celebrities, and just plain stylish people take over New York. From what I can only imagine, the days there seem like they would be a blur of cab/uber backseats, dark venues, and constant flashing from all the lightbulbs going off in the street. Now for those of us who have yet to be a part of the grand spectacle that is Fashion Week, there are a few things we can do to keep ourselves as in-the-action and as sane as possible.

1. Possibly the most obvious, but the wonders of our digitally connected world today mean that we can be half a world away watching models snapchat their way through the most exclusive events all while using a dog filter on their face. This allows you to personalize your experience between models or bloggers and have a really in-depth look at all the shows. Maybe you’re a Hadid fan (@itsgigihadid or @babybels777) or prefer the street style snaps of @chiaraferragni, or want to follow Vogue around the big apple. Either way, you will probably get an even closer look at fashion week through their snapchats, instagrams, twitters, etc. Embrace the power of the social media celebrity!

2. For the fashion lover, the true pot of gold is in the shows themselves. Fortunately, some of them will or have been streamed online, available to a wider audience! So kick back, find yourself an uncomfortable plastic chair, turn out all the lights, and spray some Chanel No. 5 in the air. Note: it may also help to have some critical friends whisper their opinions behind your back if you are going for an authentic experience.

3. Dress for the place you want to be! Didn’t quite make it to NYC cause you were stuck at work/school/not invited? Don’t fret, just own your city streets like they were made for the bold statement pieces of fashion week. Dress a bit nicer or trendier than usual and it will give you the kind of pep in your step only hordes of street style fashion photographers could give you. Disregard the weather as well as the occasion (in my opinion, it is always better to be overdressed anyways) and rock some new bold looks.

4. Pickup some magazines and pamper yourself, Plaza style. You’ll be the kind of relaxed that fashion-week goers only dream about.

Hope some of these eased the pain of the fashion week sized hole in your heart!

VMA Beauty 2016

While most consider the VMAs among the most outrageous of awards shows, it happens to be one of my favourites for a few reasons. First of all, it marks the end a summer of GREAT music and the return to my favourite season, fall. Second, stars are dressed more playfully and less safe than most other awards shows. And third, most of the looks are geared towards fall, which means tons of beauty inspiration can be drawn from them!

The trend that gets me the most excited may be the one that is the most obvious… but I can’t help it. I’m a sucker for a vampy statement lip! It was even one of my resolutions to wear more interesting lip colours. So here we are:

I was also very pleased to see the amount of glowy skin on the carpet, as I myself just picked up Jaclyn Hill’s Champagne Pop highlighter and am loving it. Seriously its disco-ball glowy in the best way possible and the formula is incredible. It will definitely be a constant for my nights out at school, especially while I still have a bit of summer colour.

Now, the final trend is something I haven’t tried myself yet but have actually see all over the place for fall. Such a different, interesting take on a smoky eye by using warm fall toned shadows. The red/auburn/orangey eye looks like a hard look to pull off but I’ve seen it look incredible on several skin tones. I’ll have to try it out and let you guys know!

What did you guys think? What was the best look of the VMAs? Did you watch?

Let me know!

Kendall Jenner is the September Vogue Cover Girl

… and she looks flawless.

kendall-jenner-2016-september-cover-vogue.jpg

As always surrounding the Kardashians, there is a lot of controversy surrounding this cover, as well as most of Kendall’s work. The September issue of Vogue has long been sacred ground as THE issue of the year featuring the model or celebrity of the moment. Last year’s Beyonce cover was absolutely gorgeous and the defining trophy of her stellar year. But does being the new face of Estee Lauder warrant the biggest cover of her young career (and life)? And more importantly does this shift in covers from models to celebrities compromise the credibility and stand-alone fame of the most notedly important fashion bible of all time?

She has been known to defend herself in the media for the argument over her modelling career’s credibility. Some people think the likes of her as well as others; Bella and Gigi Hadid, and Hailey Baldwin (today’s IT girls) as models that haven’t quite earned their spot at the top. And maybe for some thats true. However, these girls are growing up in a world much different from the supermodels of yesterday. Under scrutiny from a young age, Kendall and crew have built themselves something much more valuable than a portfolio of modelling photos. In fact, even those supermodels of yesterday cannot begin to fathom the amount of social media power and recognition that these girls have. Not only are they the faces you see on billboards and runways, but they’re the ones whose snapchat stories you devour alongside your other friends’ stories. Thats what makes them different and that makes them all-powerful.

Give the Vogue article a read and decide for yourself. And if an article isn’t a large enough judge of character, watch Keeping Up, check out her Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, etc. Decide for yourself as Kendall has given you all the power to. In my opinion, someone who can maintain all those platforms deserves the prefix “Super-” all in itself. Bring on the new realm of super modelling where being on top takes much more than just a pretty face.

What do you guys think? Did Kendall deserve the cover? Are you going to pick up the issue?

Let me know!

3 Sleeps to Osheaga: My Favourite Festival Looks From the Past

Ok everyone I am getting incredibly excited for this weekend, as I will be heading off to Montreal in only a minuscule amount of time. I have my schedule picked out but now comes the most important part, the outfits and the necessities. Now having never been to a music festival before, I will be learning alongside all of you, but I’ve done my research. So, to kick off this week I am sharing with you my all-time (of recent history) favourite music festival looks from the unattainable celebrity world, and in my next post I will show you how I drew inspiration from them! Hope this helps all you who are struggling as much as I am…

van.jpg

Of course, the reigning queen of anything remotely boho-chic or Coachella inspired, Vanessa Hudgens. Her festival (and sometimes even bohemian street style) are the stuff that best-dressed lists are made of. Here she is looking comfy and cute in an airy two-piece set. GOALS.

chi.jpg

Chiara Ferragni, because if you read blogs, you know her. Not only does she routinely kill Coachella fashion with her own trends but her fashion week looks are to die for. This girl is not afraid of anything and it pays off. Plus those double buns?

ken.jpg

You can’t mention Coachella of recent years without a mention of the Jenners. So I decided to put Kendall on the list for this look a while back. Understated and minimalistic, but stunning.

sel.jpg

If you know me you know I am a huge fan of Selena’s style/stylist. I think she always manages to look so comfortable and messy chic. This is exactly the same concept, only unattainable for anyone who is not a celebrity to be this free of grass stains by the end of the day. Must be nice…

gigi.jpg

Finally Gigi, specifically this outfit because I based one of my own looks off of it. I was inspired by the chain belt on simple black. Hopefully the combination of heavy metal on such a dark fabric doesn’t lead me to heatstroke, but again, thats why I’m testing these out for you! All in the name of fashion, am I right?

Thanks for reading! See you all soon,

Amanda
