Where Have I Bean?

1 12 hour bus ride later and I ended up in the Windy City. We were only able to spend the weekend but from just this small taste of Chicago I cannot wait to go back. Our visit went a little something like this:

Friday arrival: straight off the bus to deep dish pizza at Lou Malnati’s, checked into our hotel, walking around and shopping on the Magnificent Mile, taking Shake Shack back to the hotel room and hanging out.

Saturday: LOLLAPALOOZA – see previous post for details.

Sunday: Art Institute of Chicago, touristy stuff like the bean, took the subway to Wicker Park neighbourhood for some WICKED tacos, then strolling around and heading home.

All in all, it was a fantastic trip and I fell in love with the city. Saw the sights, ate (way too much of) the food, and saw some great performances. If I had an hour or two to spare I would have tried to go up the Sears/Willis tower to see the glass floor! If anyone has been, let me know how it is! Guess that just means I’ll have to go back someday soon…

A Day of Lollapaloozing

Processed with VSCO with hb2 preset

August 5th, 2017. 100,000 people. Chance the Rapper, Alt-J, Banks, 21 Savage, Vance Joy, Zara Larsson, Alvvays, Anime, LEON, Jacob Banks.

Needless to say, last Saturday was a pretty good one!

2 of my friends and I decided to take a last minute trip to Chicago (for the Canadian long weekend) and ended up scoring a last minute Saturday ticket to Lollapalooza. Saturday was the perfect mix of performers for us, and proved to be a great first Lolla experience!

I had been to music festivals before, but Lollapalooza is a whole other world. As such, I came up with some tips for next year:

  1. Don’t pay crazy amounts for tickets. Don’t buy them on Facebook and get scammed. Always have a plan when purchasing to scope out whether they are fake or not. Better to look skeptical than to be sorry.
  2. Go festival fashion crazy, but stay comfortable. It is a long day and an even longer 4 days (if you choose to attend the whole thing). I went from sweaty in the morning to cold and sore feet at night.
  3. If you are of age (which I was not, so no festival beers for me 😦 ) make sure you monitor yourself – and others. The amount of people I saw carried out around me was definitely unnerving. You paid this much for a ticket, the least you can do is remember the performances!
  4. Try out the vendors inside – I was shocked at how many options they had AND how reasonably priced they were. A filling meal of a chicken taco, chips, and (a decent portion of) guac for $10? DOWN. Processed with VSCO with hb2 preset
  5. This could possibly be one of the most photogenic festival grounds around. Oversized frames, props, and signs make for perfect Insta spots, but even the Chicago skyline in the back makes for a killer shot. Processed with VSCO with hb2 preset
  6. Stay close to the park or have a reliable means of transportation back. You WILL NOT want to walk, streets are overflowing with people, and you can literally watch people sprinting to catch the last trains out. Get home and order food in, you’ll be waiting ages otherwise.

I encourage you to check out Lollapalooza, or other summer music festivals in your area. They are a fantastic way to be introduced to some new music, and my playlists will definitely be upgraded from here on out. There’s something special about festival crowds all dancing to the same music. I’ll never forget Chance the Rapper talking about his Chicago roots to a packed field as far as the eye can see, the whole skyline acting as a spotlight on the crowds screaming the lyrics back to him. At that point, your extreme foot pain tends to just fade from memory.

Let me know if you have attended/ have plans to attend any festivals this summer! Which one is your favourite?

Slipping Back into Blogging

How many times can one start a post by saying “sorry for my leave of absence”? Started a new full time summer job, and boy has it got me busy. I’ve still been reading and instagramming, just not so much posting. For more day to day stuff, check out my instagram @heartofrosegoldstyle . I’ll get better one day, I swear!

So we seem to have stumbled right into the heat of summer without so much as a warning. Seriously, here in Toronto we went from jacket to pool weather in a matter of days. So I am soaking up this newfound sun.

Processed with VSCO with a6 preset

I have been wearing this oversized denim jacket nonstop since I received it for my birthday in May, and let me tell you, it is the most comfortable and versatile piece.

Processed with VSCO with a6 preset

And, to pair with it, what is more versatile than a slip dress and white sneakers. Casual and perfect for throwing on after a day at the pool at which I got a little bit more red than intended.

Jacket is from M for Mendocino (brand is Sneak Peek), slip dress is Banana Republic, shoes are Superga, and glasses are Spitfire.

Thanks for bearing with me! I hope to be posting a lot more content soon.

Thanks Mom

Hope all the mothers out there had a day full of being spoiled, good eating, and lots of love. As for my own mother, I can’t thank her enough for her kindness, strength, and humour. They definitely deserve this kind of love more than once a year!

As for my festivities, my sister and I made my mother breakfast in bed then we had a lovely little lunch with one of my grandmas including some delicious “milk and cookies” cake and then followed to take my other grandma out to dinner at The Keg. All in all, not a bad day for me either, but all our love was definitely showered on them.

Kept my outfit neutral, comfortable, and simple. Received this lovely necklace from my grandmother as a late birthday present and put it on instantly. Still obsessed with these mules, definitely one of my best staple purchase items.

One day I will remember to remove that pesky hair tie from my wrist!!!

How were your weekends? Have you started summer dressing yet? Is it warm yet where you live? Let me know!

Miley Cyrus Stuns in New Malibu Video – Get the Looks Here

Just came across Miley’s new video for Malibu after the press circus surrounding it’s release. I really liked the light airy, imagery of the video – such a far leap from most of Cyrus’ previous content it almost didn’t seem genuine. But then you hear the lyrics, and she full on admits “I never would’ve believed you if three years ago you told me I’d be here writing this song”. Neither would most of her fans. I am a fan of this new voice (over her last one anyways) and cannot wait for the rest of the album to come out.

I am taking her hair to be more of a metaphor than a fashion statement. Growing out her natural hair at the roots to replace her bleach blonde locks seems like an obvious parallel to her current career direction. Most of her hair looks are messy (a bit too messy for my taste, but definitely beach-y and natural, which I can appreciate) and down or simple, almost juvenile hairstyles like pigtails and braids. All to frame her almost bare face to which only a slight shimmery shadow and mascara are added.

Screen Shot 2017-05-12 at 12.13.16 AM

All the clothing she wore was neutral toned – either white, cream, or grey. She kept the outfits stylistically simple with few accessories but they all worked perfectly on her. They all connected to one another through their softness – a contrast to her harsh image in the past. They featured gorgeous delicate lacework or warm and cozy knits. Shop some of my similar picks below. Love how these looks warmed us up to Miley, while still remaining in the background and letting her music and natural beauty shine.

Zara Cotton Sweater

Majorelle Western Ridge Dress

Zara Lace Top

Forever 21 Off-The-Shoulder Smocked Romper

Endless Rose Flared Lace Dress with Bell Sleeves

So what do you guys think? Are you a fan of the Miley comeback (I grew up in the Hannah Montana generation so I’ll always be rooting for her…)? Did you like the look of her video? Let me know!

Newest Member of the Two Decades Club

Celebrated my 20th birthday this past weekend and thought it would be fun to reflect on my first two decades with 20 things I have learned.

20th birthday night out outfit

  1. Say yes to as many things as possible, but not more than you can handle.
  2. Try to leave everyone with the impression of being kind and courteous. The world is smaller than you think.
  3. But don’t be afraid to stand up for yourself and tell others how you feel.
  4. Grades can be the bane of your existence, don’t let them stress you out too much.
  5. Don’t study hard, study smart. Limit distractions, plan to do a bit each day, and DON’T START THE NIGHT BEFORE (still learning this one)…
  6. Sometimes week night dollar beers (or happy hour) is necessary. Plan accordingly for the next day.
  7. Sometimes staying in and watching Netflix over homework is necessary. Don’t be afraid to give yourself a break every now and again.
  8. Where you live or who you live with defines so little about your friendships. Decide who matters and invest time in those relationships.
  9. Wearing a nice outfit to school or for an interview can change your entire outlook. Feel good in what you wear, be confident and most importantly, be COMFORTABLE.
  10. All relationships have the potential to become toxic. Listen to those around you and don’t become blinded by the situation you are in.
  11. Your parents know a whole lot more than you, but not everything.
  12. If you wouldn’t want your grandparents and teachers to see it, don’t post it.
  13. Try not to talk negatively about people. Technology can make your words last forever.
  14. Pour all of yourself into what you love, and what you love to do.
  15. That being said, venture out from the path you are on and try new things, classes, etc. You never know what you are missing out on.
  16. Don’t pass up on a photo op because of you not looking your best. You’ll want those memories later.
  17. Save your money for rainy days and important things, but also spend some if you come across things you want. Treat yo’self.
  18. Always have a kick-ass playlist ready to go for car jams and impromptu pre’s at your place. My Spotify is constantly updating.
  19. Don’t take yourself too seriously. Your life isn’t perfect so your Instagram doesn’t have to be. Post the pics you like, and keep them, you’ll want to look back at them.
  20. You don’t have to have a million friends to celebrate with, or a million followers to like your posts. Sometimes you have a better time with a few close friends taking goofy pictures squished in your bathroom because the lighting is so great (see above pic) and posting them to remember how glad you were to turn 20 with all of them present.

Cherry Blossom Blooms and Brews in High Park

I am officially home for the summer and I have made a promise to discover more of what my city has to offer. Plus, the gorgeous weather doesn’t hurt, right?

Yesterday I ventured down to High Park in hopes of seeing the beautiful cherry blossoms for their limited-time-only peak. It is a beautiful sight, with those gorgeous pink trees covering everyone below in a soft rose-tinted light. Unfortunately, we happened to stumble across the wrong side of the park in which there were no cherry blossoms. SO, I will have to go back another day before their time is over.

Guess I wore my new cherry blossom (ish) bodysuit from Zara for nothing right? WRONG

We ended up stumbling across the ultimate Canadian patio for lunch, called Loons Pub. They even happened to have the local High Park Brewery beer with a special limited time “Cherry Blossom Lager” so, needless to say, not everything was wasted.

Food was upscale pub grub where I got the Pulled Duck Confit Sandwich and my mom got the Chicken and goat cheese sandwich, for which we took half of each (including half fries half salad – the fries were to die for). Overall, it was a great place to watch the game and I hope to go back!

What are your plans for this weekend? Is it nice enough where you live for patio season yet? Let me know!

Dupe Discovery Day – Rag & Bone White Mules

I first came across these shoes when I was watching a YouTube video (Lauren Elizabeth). It then sparked a chain of other YouTubers (Olivia Jade, etc.) all hauling the same pair. At first I didn’t know how I felt about this new “it shoe”. It is a mule, so still very on-trend (just ordered a new pair for myself yesterday) but looked more like a winter “shoe-tie” in white… The more I have seen them, they are starting to grow on me – or maybe I just think I should like them because they have a massive blogger following. Either way, they are sure to be a hot item this season. So, if you are looking for a new wardrobe piece…

Here they are, in all their glory; the Rag & Bone “Elliot” Mules. ($550 USD). (Net A Porter) So, what do you think? Leave me a comment about what your opinion of the shoes are!

Are you hooked yet? Need to get your hands on a pair?

If you are not willing to drop that kind of a price tag on such a trendy piece, here are my alternatives!

H&M Leather Shoe Boots ($79.99 CAD)

Pour La Victoire Capri Mule ($109.95 USD)

Screen Shot 2017-04-19 at 11.32.21 PM.png

Aldo Dorthy ($90 CAD)

Franco Sarto Sela Mule ($79.95 USD)

What do you think? Which dupe captures the style the best? Would you rather splurge on the Rag and Bone ones or save with the dupes? – Or are the dupes even worth it?

Let me know!

#WWWspring30 Day 3 OOTD

Who What Wear is one of my holy grail sites to follow for fashion and it just so happens they have a great contest going on at the moment. They are known for running wardrobe challenges that offer a new trendy outfit shake-up every day. I am hoping to participate as many times a possible this month, whenever one of the ideas seems doable. So here is my outfit for day 3 of the Who What Wear Spring Wardrobe Challenge.

Processed with VSCO with t1 preset

Today’s challenge was to switch up your basic heels for a fun pop of colour. So, I took what was otherwise a relatively grey outfit (and a relatively grey day!) and added these bright blue lace up heels. I love this idea, and think it actually managed to cheer me up from the rainy weather. Everything else I kept neutral, but these shoes are so versatile that they can be brought in for many different looks.

Processed with VSCO with t1 preset

Blazer: Forever 21, Turtleneck: Mendocino, Jeans: J Brand, Shoes: Steve Madden, Watch: Michael Kors.

What do you guys think, will you be participating in this challenge? Definitely a good way to transition from a winter style rut into spring. Do you have any tips to shake off the winter blahs when it comes time for spring? Let me know!

Festival Must-Haves

I got to attend my first music festival last summer, and I probably over-packed and over-prepared for it. So today, in the middle of Coachella weekends, I wanted to share my must haves for upcoming festival season. Hopefully these aren’t too basic, but I find that I was surprised that some of them you really do need, and a lot of other things I brought were just dead weight. Of course, as you can probably see by most of the festival pics, less is definitely more, which is not always convenient on a sweltering day, let alone in the middle of the desert (kudos to you Coachella survivors!).

First, the thing I didn’t expect to need as much as I did, a collapsable water bottle. I cannot tell you how useful and practical this was. I brought it on a whim, the one I had was won at a conference or something and was sitting in my junk drawer. Mine had a clip which made it exponentially more convenient. PLEASE, I am telling you, do yourself a favour and pick one up. Being able to fill something up after standing in the astronomically long fountain lines was so nice, and probably kept me from fainting.

Second, and this one may seem obvious, but a portable phone charger! With all that instagramming and snapchatting your battery will die like no tomorrow. Everyone knows the best/headlining acts are always at nighttime, so make sure your phone is all charged up for then! Small ones like in this picture are practical for small bags, but the one I have is about the size of an iPhone, stores 4 charges worth, and can charge two phones at once. Think about what your needs will be!

Please, for your health’s sake, bring hand wipes/sanitizer to try and combat the amount of dirt and portable washrooms you will encounter before eating with your hands. Even for aesthetic sake. WASH YOUR HANDS!

Hair wraps, bands, ties, etc. It is hot, and your hair will get sweaty and gross by the end of the day. Don’t expect your curls to last. Learn how to do the instagram braids or throw it up in a bun like the rest of us.

SUNSCREEN! Obvious, but also something a lot of people get burned by (hehe get it?). Apply a solid coat at the beginning of the day and don’t pretend like you are impervious to sun damage, heck even throw on a hat. Your future self will thank you.

My don’ts include: outfits or shoes that are too crazy to be even remotely comfortable, bags that are not fanny packs, large signs or objects you will have to carry around all day and hate yourself for, makeup because who wants to retouch in small handheld mirrors (just melt and move on) and people who don’t try the cool foods the festival has to offer – your instagram will thank you.

Have a good time, sway to the music, and take lots of pictures. After all, if you didn’t instagram Coachella, did you even go?

Will you be attending any festivals this season? Which ones? Any tips for me?

xx Amanda
